Planting Trees and Shrubs

Equipment and Materials needed:

    Shovel
Pefferlaw brand Product – 3-Way Mix recommended
    Hose or accessibility to water

When: Early spring or fall.

Trees and shrubs can be purchased in several different ways.   Bare root, balled or burlap wrapped, and container. Preparation for the hole is the same for each example.

 1. Hole preparation:

Dig a wide, shallow hole. The hole should be at least 3 times’s wider than the root circle. It’s depth should be only deep enough so that the tree can sit with it’s original soil line slightly above soil level.  It doesn’t hurt to fill the hole with water and allow it to seep out before placing the root ball.  Make a mound to set the root ball on so it sits at the right depth.

2. Planting:

Choose one of the following instructions:

a) Bare root – Keep root moist until planting, wrap in damp towels if necessary.  You Prune back the roots about one inch before planting. Set  the tree in the hole, spread roots out evenly, work in the contents of Pefferlaw brand soil mix, mix with existing soil from hole, gently work soil in and around roots. Firm up the soil as you go, banking it slightly higher than the existing soil level.  Water gently. Continue on to Step 3.

b) Balled and burlap wrapped root – Set the root ball in the hole then remove the ties and unfold the burlap.  If wrappings are synthetic, remove them from the hole.  Gently loosen the soil around the roots, adjust the depth of hole if necessary.  Work in the contents of Pefferlaw Brand soil, mix with existing soil from hole,  gently work soil in and around roots. Firm up soil as you go, banking it slightly higher than the existing soil level. Cut off excess burlap. Water gently. Continue on to step 3.

 c) Container – Water the tree/shrub the night before, carefully remove from container and shake off the soil, do not allow the soil to fall into the hole.  Place the roots in the hole and loosen gently.  Prune if necessary. Work in the contents of Pefferlaw brand soil mix with existing soil from the hole, gently work the soil in around the roots. Firm up the soil as you go, banking it slightly higher than the existing soil level.  Water thoroughly. Continue on to step 3.

3.  Dig an irrigation ditch around the previously dug area to catch rainfall or water and direct it to roots.  Keep freshly planted trees watered thoroughly for the first week while the roots become established.

Maintaining Trees and shrubs:  Deter soil compacting by removing sod from around the base.  Replace the sod with a 6” layer of natural organic mulch to conserve moisture and deter weeds which compete for moisture and nutrients. Do not place mulch directly in contact with the trunk.
